ESL john wesley

In 2018, our Mark Karsner recognized a pressing need here in our community for immigrants to learn English.
He presented this need to our leadership team and pastor, and we started our very own ESL program.
The program built up to some 50 students and 15 tutors.

We found the students by word-of-mouth

The program runs from mid- September through April.
While there are some obvious obstacles to this outreach this year, there is still a plan to resume in September 2025.

Mike Fishbein is now the director.
Stay tuned for the schedule.

English Tutors Needed!

If you would like to help people learn or improve their English, we could use your help!
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

WHAT:
  • New volunteer tutors are paired up with experienced tutors.
  • Tutors meet once a week with their students (usually 2-4 students per class with 2 tutors) at John Wesley United Methodist Church, 270 Gifford Street
  • We meet at John Wesley, but there is no religious affiliation with the tutoring classes. All volunteers are welcome.
  • Students range from complete beginners to competent speakers who want to improve their English.

WHY:
  • Helping people learn/improve their English can make a huge difference in their lives. It can help them get a better job, make new friends, and do things that they could not do otherwise with limited use of the language.
  • Meeting with appreciative students is informal and fun. We learn along with our students and create friendships.
